From Planning Parties to Shaping Policies: My Story Part 1
Discover the transformative journey from event planning to influencing policies firsthand in this captivating personal narrative
Hello,
If you’ve ever wondered how my career trajectory went from what seemed to be a steady line on a graph to a sudden 90-degree spike into policy and social advocacy, you're not alone. I have wondered, too, and it's weird because I sometimes feel like a third party in my own life experiences.
I’m an extroverted introvert whose journey began in the vibrant event industry of Nigeria, where I spent over 15 years helping assemble and breathe life into countless events. This early career was marked by dynamic scenes of creativity and execution, as I delved into every facet of event life, applying rigorous project management methods long before I formalized this expertise with a certification. However, beneath the surface of these bustling activities, a persistent tug of advocacy quietly pulled at me, whispering of deeper engagements beyond the immediacy of event logistics.
My transition from Nigeria to Canada marked a turning point. Here, amidst new landscapes and communities, I encountered subtle yet significant barriers that many immigrants face—barriers not easily defined yet distinctly felt through lived experiences. This realization catalyzed my shift towards advocacy, driving me to explore the realms of Public Policy and Global Affairs in my graduate studies. It is here that I found my calling not just in addressing, but actively dismantling these unseen challenges through informed policy and passionate advocacy.
Yet, my affinity for advocacy wasn’t born in the spotlight of grand events but rather in the quieter moments between them. In Nigeria, the event industry is as much about people as it is about the spectacle. It was here, among diverse teams and clients, that I first learned the power of voice—both in articulating visions and in negotiating spaces. These skills, honed in countless production meetings and site setups, were my first unwitting steps towards advocacy, teaching me how to listen actively and speak effectively.
As I transitioned to life in Canada, the contrast between my past environments and my new reality sharpened my focus. I enrolled in a graduate program in Public Policy and Global Affairs, driven by a desire to understand the systemic barriers that affect immigrant communities. Courses on policy analysis and global systems didn’t just reshape my worldview; they gave me the tools to translate personal and communal experiences into actionable advocacy. This educational journey was not just academic; it was deeply personal, fueling my commitment to making a tangible difference.
The path of advocacy is fraught with challenges, particularly when confronting entrenched systemic issues. One of the most daunting aspects has been realizing the scale of change required and the slow pace at which it often moves. Yet, there have been triumphs—moments when my efforts have directly impacted policies or when I've seen the communities I serve find their footing and voice in their new home. These victories are not just milestones but also powerful reminders of the impact of dedicated advocacy.
Currently, I am deeply involved in initiatives aimed at improving the integration of immigrants into Canadian society. This includes working on policy proposals that address employment barriers and social services accessibility. Each project offers a chance to apply my skills and passion for the betterment of others, turning insights gained from my studies and personal experiences into practical applications.
Reflecting on my journey, I am struck by how each phase of my life has contributed uniquely to my role as an advocate. Looking ahead, I aspire to further influence public policy, perhaps even at an international level, to advocate for migrant rights globally. The journey of advocacy is ongoing—a continuous commitment to learning, growing, and effecting change.
As I share my journey with you, I invite each of you to consider the paths you are on and the potential impacts of your own advocacies. Whether through direct action, supporting policy changes, or simply being informed citizens, we all have roles to play in shaping a just society. Let’s continue to learn from each other and move forward with purpose and passion.
